Lecture ”Decolonization through art & glass” together with Tomas Colbengtson.
During centuries the indigenous people of north Scandinavia and Russia, the Sami people, have been subject to discrimination and colonization. The Sami artists Monica L Edmondson and Tomas Colbengtson have introduced a non-traditional material, glass, to their culture to raise issues about their Sami heritage.
Panel discussion ”Translating Tradition” together with Maree Clarke, Australian 1st nation artist and Kirstie Rea, glass artist. Moderator: Aimee Frodsham
Artists Maree Clarke and Monica L Edmondson will discuss the issues of cultural knowledge sharing faced by Indigenous communities, why the passing down of cultural knowledge is so important to their communities today, how lost knowledge is being rediscovered and used within their practices and how some of these stories can be translated using glass as a contemporary material. Australian artist Kirstie Rea will share her experiences of working with Indigenous artists to create pieces that are grounded in a strong connection to country. Artistic Director of Canberra Glassworks Aimee Frodsham will act as moderator for this panel
